The Canadian Health Services Research Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the 2009 Mythbusters Award:

Kathleen Decker

University of Manitoba for

“Myth: Whole-body screening is an effective cancer screening test”

André R. Maddison

Dalhousie University for

“Myth: Patients with primary care needs are causing emergency department overcrowding.”

The winners were awarded $1,500 as well as the opportunity to work with Foundation staff to prepare their Mythbusters for publication. In addition, the Foundation provided funding for the two students to attend the 2009 Canadian Association for Health Services and Policy Research (CAHSPR) conference in Calgary, Alberta, where the award was presented.

The award is designed to provide students with the opportunity to prepare a user-friendly summary of the research evidence behind some of today's major debates in Canadian health services management and policy.

The Mythbusters series was launched in 2000 in recognition of the large number of myths – widely held but false beliefs – in Canada’s healthcare systems that could be countered with research evidence. Issues in the series are designed to communicate actionable messages to policy makers, managers and others in a conversational, easy-to-read way.
